GENIUS...

He is a brilliant neurosurgeon, the "boy genius" whose research into the workings of the human brain has gained him worldwide renown. He himself had been the subject at birth of an incredible medical experiment, one which had succeeded beyond the wildest dreams of the medical profession.

..OR MADMAN?

But now he has overstepped the boundaries of that profession, carrying on his own experiments in a manner so bizarre as to be inconceivable to the mind of the average man. His patients are no longer patients, but helpless victims, their brains controlled by his psychic and technological powers. He will sacrifice anyone or anything to his manic obsession. He has become an agent of death rather than a saver of lives. He must be stopped. But how, and by whom...?

(Approximately 90,000 words.)

The story was interesting leaving an opening for a sequal . However the method used to switch from one scene to another made it somewhat difficult to follow without slowing down reading speed .Were it not for that I would have given it a 5 star rating

Brain Stem edition by Robert W Walker Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This book was first published in 1985 as Brain Watch.
If this had been presented as a book from 1985 instead of 2010, I would have given it a higher rating. As it was, he republished it under another title with a new publication date. Unfortunately, I didn't find this out until I had finished reading it and was posting a review.
As I read it, I found it very dated and poorly written. The science wasn't very good even for 1985 and the mystery portion made huge leaps of faith to continue the story. I did finish reading it, but was disappointed that the ending didn't improve the book. I would have written more of what I thought about the book, but I thought it was more important that people know that it isn't a new work and isn't worth reading. If you love the author, then you might like it just to see how his style changed.
I love medical mysteries. Bring them on! Would love to see more of these, especially those by Robin Cook. What do you think?
It's midnight and I just finished reading this book. It is not a book that you easily set aside, I couldn't until it was finished, now I am looking for more by this author. I love medical thrillers. This book is more than that. It involves not only medicine but also crime drama. It involves local police in a small town and a reporter looking for a story, he found a doozey. It goes beyond that even as it becomes an international problem and our own government seems to be involved in some way. I'm thinking there should be another book continuing the story since the ending of the story left room for that. If you like this kind of book then get it you will love it as much as I did I'm sure.
The writing is exciting and fast paced. The characters are well developed and intelligent. The story grows and grows, adding ingredient after ingredient. I literally couldn't put it down.
Yes, the characters are shallow, lacking background or context. Yes, the story is contrived. But this book fits perfectly in its genre of "scifi/medical/thriller," and it is quite similar to a Robin Cook/Michael Chrichton novel.

The book's formatting was troublesome, especially the absence of any visual cues for scene changes within a chapter. This, plus some specific typographical errors, led me to suspect that this novel's text was scanned and converted using OCR software, and would have benefited from a few hours of a proofreader's time.

No, it's not a great book, and yes, it's formulaic, and some elements of the story line tested my ability to suspend disbelief. But it was an enjoyable read.
Unfortunately there wasn't enough in this book to keep me gripped throughout, BUT it was definitely a unique idea and execution on it.

I think the author is one to watch and the book's still worth sampling to see if you like it. If the sample floats your boat, the rest of the novel will keep you interested.
Captain Somoza thinks there are too many female suicides in Elgin,Illinois. Sgt Spears has been having nightmares for a month about one female suicide. When Spears is called to Joanna Peters apartment to investigate yet another suicide, he recognizes the corpse. Dr. Brava is a wacko in my opinion, the author went really in far,far left field.
The story was interesting leaving an opening for a sequal . However the method used to switch from one scene to another made it somewhat difficult to follow without slowing down reading speed .Were it not for that I would have given it a 5 star rating
